Information for Parents

South Dakota - Assembly
South Dakota – Assembly

As kids grow their own cabbages, they learn about healthy eating, nutrition, nurturing nature, responsibility, and also discover the satisfaction of producing, harvesting, and eating fresh veggies, through gardening.

If you’re a parent or guardian who is interested in helping your child learn to garden, ask your child’s 3rd Grade teacher to register for the Bonnie Plants 3rd Grade Cabbage Program! Your child’s teacher must be the one to register the class. Your child will receive a free cabbage plant, ready to grow!

Homeschool groups can also register as a group for the program. Once registered, Bonnie Plants will coordinate a drop-off location for your homeschool group’s cabbage plants.

Gardening Help
You can find information about planting, growing, trouble-shooting and harvesting your child’s Bonnie cabbage in the Students section of this website. Whether your child plants in ground, in a large container, or raised bed you’ll enjoy the experience of helping your child learn to garden. Helpful info from Bonnie Plants is just a click away.

$1,000 Scholarship
Once your child’s cabbage is full-grown, make sure he or she submits a digital cellphone image of themselves with their cabbage and the weight of the harvested cabbage to his or her 3rd grade teacher. (Click here for submission and digital image tips.) The teacher will choose one “best in class” entry, based on size and appearance, per class to enter in your state’s random drawing for a chance to win a $1,000.00 scholarship from Bonnie Plants, plus statewide recognition for that student. Bonnie Plants awards a $1,000.00 scholarship to one winner from each state. If necessary, a parent may submit their child’s entry.
